The ERWC (Expository Reading and Writing Course) is a CSU designed, college preparatory English Language Arts course for grade 12. It is a rhetoric-based curriculum designed to develop academic literacy with advanced proficiency in rhetorical and analytical reading, writing, thinking, vocabulary, and speaking. The ERWC is an “inquiry-oriented curriculum that helps high school students develop the high-level literacies they need to succeed in college and beyond”[1]. ERWC students will explore the college application process. An emphasis is placed on college research and writing skills, such as database research and argumentative composition. Grammar review and vocabulary development accompany the reading selections and essay responses. In addition, ERWC students practice speaking and presentation competencies to accompany the research and writing activities.

The English IV: Lit and Pop Culture course combines the disciplines of World Literature, art, music, film, philosophy and world cultures in a holistic approach to learning. The primary focus is to prepare college-bound 12th graders to succeed in the rigorous academic setting of college. In addition to standard texts, several films will be shown to heighten learning and add a dimension of visual understanding to difficult concepts and ideas discussed in class. It can also serve to make the class and the material presented more relevant and enjoyable. The course is an in-depth project-based class designed to encourage and improve skills in: communication (reading, writing, conversing, presenting and listening for a multitude of purposes), organization (locating, accessing and organizing information), research and citation (MLA), digital technology (Excel, Google Slides and Prezi), primary and secondary source analysis (evaluating and applying information), and formal academic writing.
